CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait (Army News Service, Jan. 3, 2007) - Football fever took on a new dimension Monday as Third Army/ U.S. Army Central servicemembers watched the last game of the NFL regular season and members of Chicago Bears' 1985 Super Bowl Championship team signed autographs on camp. Stars for Stripes, a nonprofit organization that provides entertainment to internationally deployed servicemembers, sponsored the three-day Ringin' in the New Year tour with former Bears players Jim McMahon, Kevin Butler, actress Karri Turner and news personality Dave Price.

"It's a big moral booster," said Capt. Anthony Manning, the 863rd Engineer Detachment commander. "The troops are happy. They will talk about this for the next week."

The Soldiers gleamed joy as they waited in line with pictures, footballs, Bears baseball hats and Bears banners. The 863rd Soldiers watch every game they can - even those airing at 4 a.m.

"When you come in the barracks (on a Sunday night) you can hear the Soldiers hollering during the Bears' games," said Manning. The Soldiers' exuberance was shared by those on the tour.

Visiting 12 camps in three days, the tour was a chance for the celebrities to meet and see the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces.

"These people are serving our country," said Price, weather anchor for CBS News' The Early Show. "We owe our debt of gratitude."

Price added "if anyone has any doubt about the current state our country is in they need to spend a week with the men and women (in the Middle East). Our country is in great hands."

A Miracle on MALS Street

Marines hold out a banner at Al Asad, Iraq, Jan. 2 to thank the people and communities who supported them during the holiday season. The banner was sent to them, signed by many of the contributors, and the Marines thought it appropriate to sign the reverse side of the banner and send it back to the communities as a show of thanks and appreciation. The Marines are with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 16, Marine Aircraft Group 16 (Reinforced), 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward).

AL ASAD, Iraq (Jan. 3, 2007) -- For many of the deployed service members, the holiday seasons pass by without them ever noticing. Every day is a routine groundhogs day, and they are always focused on their job, mission and safety.

This celebrated season, however, became renown by the Marines and service members with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 16, Marine Aircraft Group 16 (Reinforced), 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), as three large and separate communities each adopted the unit for the holidays.

"Three states contributed," said Maj. Tom Lenhardt, operations officer, MALS-16. "Each state had a single person organizing hundreds in their communities to provide us with Christmas gifts. They wanted to adopt MALS and provide us with a 'Christmas party.'"

The three areas to contribute to the logistics unit were Hendersonville, N.C., Memphis, Tenn., and Crystal Lake, Ill., but it wasn't narrowed down to just those three areas. Several of the surrounding communities and towns of these areas helped support the troops of MALS-16 this holiday season, too.

"It was the largest giving project I've seen," said Lenhardt, a 38-year-old Mesa, Ariz., native. "The presents filled a 40-foot container. There were enough gifts for each person to have three presents -- two boxes and a stocking. There are close to 600 people in the MALS. Just to give you an idea of how many gifts there were, it took 30 Marines to organize the giveaway."

The service members received numerous care packages through their deployment. However, it was through the efforts of Mary Moltmann of Crystal Lake, Ill., Becky Butler of Memphis, Tenn., and Shanna Lanning of Hendersonville, N.C., that they were able to receive so many donations for the holidays.

Although the Marines who received these special supporters' gifts are far from home and from being able to thank them in person, they were allowed to enjoy themselves and have sent many, many thank you letters to the communities who helped them.

"The magnitude of what these people did for us is just extreme," said Navy Lt. Dan Hall, chaplain, MALS-16, and a Memphis, Tenn., native. "For the Marines here, this made Christmas one of their happiest days. We made it into a very big morale-building event. The (commanding officer) and (sergeant major) came out as Santa Claus, and the staff noncommissioned officers and officers were their reindeer."

For the service members with MALS-16, this holiday season was made possible by the tremendous and noble efforts and generosity from the folks in the United States, and they wish for nothing more than to be able to thank everyone who lent a hand.

"It was outstanding and very generous," said Cpl. Scott E. Tremayne, flight equipment technician, MALS-16, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 165 (Reinforced), 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), and a 21-year-old native of Upland, Calif. "I'm very grateful for the people back home to send all of this stuff for us. They are the ones we do this for. They are the fuel for our fire. We wouldn't be here without them. They keep our hopes alive and our will to keep going strong."

Task Force Focused Operation Disrupts IED Cells in AO Courage

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SR# 122806-01
Dec. 28, 2006

By Capt. Gregory Stopyra
3-8 Combined Arms Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division

The weather was cold, the nights were long; yet “Warhorse” Soldiers from Task Force 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, persevered and were successful during their missions in support of the 25th Infantry Division’s latest operation.

The recent division operation was aimed at reducing improvised explosive devices on routes throughout the division’s area of operations. Maj. Gen. Benjamin R. Mixon, commander of Multinational Division North and the 25th Infantry Division, asked Soldiers to put forth 150 percent effort during this mission; and that they did. Beginning the morning of the Dec. 18, the Soldiers from Warhorse spent the next 72 continuous hours disrupting the anti-Iraqi forces’ IED networks and seizing their weapons caches.

When asked how this mission was different than previous, Sgt. Joshua D. Morrison from Company A, 3-8 CAV, said, “During this operation we were completely embedded and reliant on the Iraqi Army. They were in the lead and we were supporting.”

Warhorse Soldiers endured some harsh weather during the evenings, with temperatures reaching as low as the upper 30s. This, however, did not affect their mission.
“You're not really thinking about the cold while you're conducting the mission, there are too many other things running through your mind. As soon as you're done though you're trying to find a spot to warm up,” Morrison said.

As a result of the tremendous effort put forth by Task Force 3-8 CAV, Soldiers were able to capture numerous AIF linked to illegal activities; seize several weapons caches; destroy hiding positions used to trigger IEDs; and discover numerous IEDs prior to detonation. Most importantly, there were no Coalition Forces injured during the three-day operation.
