Talking With Heroes in Iraq!!

10/1/06, Abilene, TX—Talking With Heroes Talk Show announces that Bob Calvert, the show's host, and Andrew Lupin will be conducting their internet talk shows in Iraq the first few weeks of October. The guest lists for these talk shows will be posted to the Talking With Heroes Web site after the show representatives return to the USA.

CPT Mark Lappegaard with the Army National Guard's 1/34th Brigade Combat Team (Red Bulls), Public Affairs in Iraq is coordinating the tour.

Talking with Heroes Talk Shows are not about politics. Calvert will interview men and women with the 1/34th Brigade Combat Team in different FOB’s around Iraq as well as other military personnel. The focus of all Talking with Heroes interviews with military personnel is for them to talk about the good they have been and continue to do in helping the people of Iraq.

The Talking with Heroes Talk Show began as a result of Calvert’s daughter enlisting in the Army and his son-in-law being deployed to Iraq. It seemed to Calvert that America deserves to hear the side of the story rarely being reported about all the good our brave men and women are doing in every area that they serve around the world including in Iraq and Afghanistan. Calvert believes our men and women who are serving deserve to have the opportunity to share their stories. That is what Talking with Heroes will be doing with the talk shows taped in Iraq with the Army National Guard Soldiers and other members of the military serving there.

These talk shows from Iraq will start airing on the Talking with Heroes Internet Radio Network beginning with the Oct 22, 2006 Sunday evening talk show.

To listen go to www.TalkingWithHeroes.com then click on the StarDust Radio Banner that reads "Click Here To Listen." Everybody with access to the internet who has the ability to listen to audio on their computers can listen to Talking with Heroes Talk Shows. Once each talk show has aired, they then go into a “Past Shows/Archives” so people can listen anytime day or night, around the world. Some or all of these talk shows may also air on a Cable TV Network (that will be announced on the Web site, as well as the availability of these talk shows on DVD’s).

HAMRIN, Iraq (October 4, 2006) -- For many Iraqis, the only face of the Iraqi Security Forces they see is the one entering their house looking for suspected insurgents.

To help children see a more human side of those responsible for protecting their country, Soldiers from the 3rd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division visited two schools in this lakeside village in northern Diyala Province to hand out school supplies and talk to the children about the importance of staying in school.

They’re the ones that are going to be leading Iraq’s future tomorrow, said Col. Yas, the 3rd Brigade, 5th IAD, G-5, through an interpreter during a visit to a Hamrin secondary school. They should side with the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi Police and not side with the terrorists.

Some children were shy, others whimpered at the sight of the Soldiers, others still were eager to talk and mingle with the troops. But, as soon as the school supplies were brought into the room, each child smiled and anxiously awaited their turn to receive their treasure -- a few pencils, a sharpener, an eraser, a ruler and a pair of scissors.

“A lot of the towns see the Iraqi Army out and about but they see them doing kinetic type operations,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Viburs, a team chief with Tactical Psychological Operations Team 15-32nd, attached to 310th Psychological Operations Company. “They see them doing cordon and searches; they see them doing (traffic control points) and searching cars. I think it’s important for the kids to see the softer side of the Iraqi Army. They live amongst them. They serve the Iraqi people. I think it’s important for the kids to see that.”

Soldiers from the 2nd Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Task Force Lightning joined the Iraqi Army patrol as well and mingled with the younger Iraqi citizens. The Soldiers also handed out soccer balls to each school.

MUQDADIYA, Iraq (October 3, 2006) -- Americans will not always be present in Iraq. That's the hope all Soldiers share as they continue to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

To ensure that Americans will one day be able to leave Iraq, a capable Iraqi Security Force needs to be in place. Iraqis are taking a larger role in the stability of their country each day.

During a recent joint patrol, Soldiers from Apache Troop, 2nd Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Task Force Lightning and counterparts from the Iraqi Army's 3rd Brigade, 5th Division conducted a cordon and search and a hasty traffic control point in this northern region of Diyala Province.

"We're putting them in the front so they can take charge," said Sgt. 1st Class David Acosta, a section sergeant from the Mortar Platoon, Apache Troop.

Coalition Forces are taking a less active role in this region as evidenced by the recent ceremony that saw the 3rd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division take control of the stability of the northern region of Diyala Province.

"We're not here to occupy; we're not here to impose our customs and our beliefs," Acosta said. "Once we leave Iraq, eventually, it's the Iraqi people that are going to handle this. It's going to be left to them."

During this mission, the joint patrol set up a traffic control point to search for illegal weapons and other forbidden items. As each vehicle approaches, the Soldiers, both Iraqi and American, are weary of the occupants inside. Even with gun trucks covering their every move, worse case training scenarios are often at the forefront of these Soldiers' minds.

"I'd say you have to be a little nervous; it keeps you on your toes and it makes you do the right thing. It's always easier to do the easy right over the hard wrong," said Spc. Joshua Toller, a driver with the Mortar Platoon, Apache Troop.

While this checkpoint yielded no weapons, it put the anti-Iraqi forces on notice that the ISF is in the area and lets the citizens know their troops are active in protecting them.

"We have to deny the enemy freedom of movement," Acosta said. "They're doing things that affect the government to move forward, to progress. We have to recon constantly to keep them off the streets."
