ARLINGTON, Va. (Oct. 21, 2007) – Daniel Murphy, father of Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy touches the gravestone of Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Chris J. Scherkenbach, during a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. The same enemy forces that killed Lt. Murphy, also shot down the helicopter Scherkenbach and 15 others were traveling in near Asadabad, Afghanistan, June 28, 2005. Daniel and Maureen Murphy will accept the Medal on Honor of behalf of their son during a ceremony at the White House on Oct. 22, 2007. Lt. Murphy was killed during a reconnaissance mission while exposing himself to enemy fire in order to call in support after his four-man team came under attack by enemy forces. Murphy is the first service member to receive the honor for actions during Operation Enduring Freedom and the first Navy recipient of the medal since Vietnam.
