Look, Folks - A Moonbat-Modified Gitmo on Wheels

From Fox News:

Amnesty International's Anti-Guantanamo Display Rouses Controversy

Thursday, June 26, 2008
By Cristina Corbin

NEW YORK — Amnesty International is currently touring the country with a life-sized replica of a maximum security prison cell at Guantánamo Bay. But critics say the cell, which is an attempt to call attention to alleged human rights abuses at the camp, is missing basic amenities provided to prisoners.

The 7x10-foot cell, on display on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., lacks amenities like bedding, toiletries and a copy of the Koran, and it has nothing to illustrate that regular meals are served to inmates three times a day.

Amnesty International-USA said the cell, which contains a toilet, sleeping bunk and a small window, is meant to symbolize the U.S. government's alleged mistreatment of detainees at the prison.

It said the tour is designed to increase public awareness and mount pressure on the Bush administration and Congress to close down the U.S.-controlled detention center. The group planned its display in Washington to coincide with a House Judiciary subcommittee's hearing on harsh interrogation techniques.

But Charles "Cully" Stimson, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs, lashed out against Amnesty's campaign, calling it a "complete fraud in misrepresenting the condition of detention at Gitmo today."

No, They're Not Anti-Troop....

Gotta love it. Everytime I put up a post about how the antiwar crowd is almost universally anti-troop, some knucklehead comes by and puffs about how I'm doing a disservice to them, how they really do care about the troops, they just don't want to see them "die for oil" or some other cliche antiwar line.

And it never fails - wait a little while, and they always prove me right.

Sadly, but predictably, they've done it again, at Milwaukee's Army Recruiting Center:

All the windows of the station were busted out, and graffiti that read “War is Offensive” was scrawled on the side of the building. A witness told WTMJ that he saw anti-war slogans written on the windows before they were broken.
Still, I can't help but chuckle. "War is offensive" is the best thing you could come up with? And you write your slogans on the windows - and then break them. Brilliant.

These particular non-violent, peace-loving, 'why can't we all just get along' types have been to this Recruiting Station before - throwing smoke bombs and paint. How peaceful. One of their sentimental, happy, peace-love-joy messages this time? "Expect Resistance."

Some days, I really wish these losers could be on the receiving end when our troops show them what the word "offensive" means in military circles.

Nah, they're not anti-troop. Of course not.

I may be a "Macchiavellian Warmonger" (and proud of it, thank you very much), but at least I don't hide what I believe. I am pro-military, pro-America, pro-kicking-enemy-tail, and decidedly anti-hippie-coward.

As far as that "Expect Resistance" thing goes? Right back at you, peacenik - never again will you derail the public opinion. Recycle all the 40-year-old crap you want, but when you meet those of us who understand what we owe our Heroes, Expect Resistance.

Iraq “Veterans” Threaten Bombings, Homosexual Rape Against Pro-Troop Opponents at “Winter Soldier II”

Washington, D.C., March 11, 2008 – Members of the anti-troop organization Iraq Veterans Against the War, who Friday are restaging Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry’s infamous Winter Soldier Investigation of the Vietnam era, have threatened physical harm including bombings and homosexual rape against any veterans or troop supporters who oppose them.

Columnist and commentator Michelle Malkin, who was threatened by an IVAW member on his blog titled Wobbly Nomad, has released commentary on her website in which the same IVAW member calls for bombing pro-troop organizations that are planning a vigil to counter the IVAW event on Friday in Silver Springs Maryland. http://michellemalkin.com/2008/03/10/a-bomb-threat-against-the-gathering-of-eagles/

The threats include statements that while he won’t attack pro-troop organizations at the Silver Springs vigil, apparently due to anticipated heavy security, the IVAW member identified in media outlets as an IVAW member http://ivaw.org/user/542 will “dry hump” any pro-troop individuals he encounters elsewhere afterward. The threats, posted at the website http://wobblynomad.blogspot.com state in part:

“I don’t know what f---ing idiot lobbied for these s------d right-wingers to be allowed at Winter Soldier but I fear for their safety on the campus. I’ve decided I’m probably going to waste most of them on sight – dry-hump them all if I see them in DC away from Winter Soldier. …. Dry-humped. ... See if a judge gives a s--t when I punch holes in the backs of their heads by going through the fronts of them dry-hump them ….

A leader of a national coalition of pro-troop and veteran organizations that is gathering in the Washington area Friday and Saturday to oppose the planned reenactment, Tuesday expressed outrage at the attempts to intimidate pro-troop organizations.

Col. Harry Riley, a decorated Vietnam Veteran and leader of Eagles Up, which will be standing vigil outside the IVAW event Friday, said in response, “For decades America has listened, watched, and disagreed with counter-parts of IVAW passively, without confrontation or violence.

“Now that America is standing up for our nation and troops, exercising free speech, an IVAW member is threatening violence, including homosexual rape against anyone who protests against winter soldier activity ... Does IVAW condone this criminal rage?”

Col. Riley noted that Sen. John Kerry’s infamous “Winter Soldier” anti-Vietnam War event is the predecessor of the IVAW exercise which will feature “testimony” alleging atrocities committed by American troops this time in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Eagles Up http://eaglesup.us and other organizations are taking aim at Winter Soldier II, noting that most of the “veterans” who “testified” in Kerry’s event a generation ago were later found to be frauds, and their testimony was either disproved or impossible to verify, yet the damage to the Vietnam generation was long enduring.

Military oriented websites are carrying the IVAW blogger’s statements on their discussion forums, and additional comments attributed to the blogger include threats to bomb the pro-troop events and this statement “We will fix the broken world? Save it from all the chickenhawk armchair warrior gathering of idiots. But I still want to blow up their f-----g gathering.

The comments also include a threat of gun violence: “And don’t be afraid. I am not in the database as PTSD-suffering, so I can still buy all manners of handguns. Not to mention the vast arsenal I brought back from Iraq!”

Hosted by Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), others backing the Winter Soldier reenactment include the ANSWER coalition, CODE PINK, and MOVEON.ORG. But pro-troop organizers including Col. Riley say this generation’s allegations of rampant atrocities committed by American troops will not go unchallenged.

“In 1971 the media accepted the stories of atrocities literally without question, and Kerry even testified before Congress using graphic images of torture and murder, which he claimed were widespread and American military policy.” Col. Riley noted.

“But Vietnam and Iraq war veterans and their supporters are demanding that all who participate in the IVAW event submit to identification verification and that their claims are specific including times, dates, places, units involved, leadership and witnesses.

“In addition, anyone claiming to have participated in or witnessed an atrocity without attempting to halt it or report it will be referred to the appropriate civilian and military authorities as participants in or accessories to war crimes.”

Col. Riley said “We have two objectives: To counter and challenge IVAW Winter Soldier II (WSII) Testimony on March 14 by demanding ‘truth.’

“Our second objective is to participate in a peaceful march in Washington, DC on March 15th assembling in the vicinity of the Washington Monument that reflects a view of appreciation, uplifting, pride in America, our troops and families. This will be a positive event with flags, banners, patriotic music, fellowship, and oriented for the entire family of patriots.

“Americans are standing up to attacks on our nation and people from those that tend to support the constant drum beat of surrender," Col. Riley said. “Citizens that demean, denigrate and dishonor our warriors forget these same warriors sacrifices give the anti-everything crowd the freedom to speak their vile, distorted messages.

“Thousands will put ‘boots on the ground’ in Washington, DC on March 14/15 to challenge one devious aspect of the threat on America – those that would have us surrender to the Islamic butchers and dishonor our warriors,” Col Riley added.

“It's a sacrifice for many of us to get to DC but it's also a sacrifice for our families and warriors to offer up their lives. The least we can do is protect their backs.”

B**** on the Bench

Another jaw-dropper from the anti-war crowd:

A California judge rejected a foster teen's request for early enlistment with the Marine Corps — and a $10,000 signing bonus — reportedly on the grounds that the judge didn't approve of the Iraq war.

Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Marilyn Mackel denied 17-year-old Shawn Sage's request to join the military last October, according to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News.

"The judge said she didn't support the Iraq war for any reason we're over there," Marine recruiter Sgt. Guillermo Medrano of the Simi Valley U.S. Marine Corps recruiting office told the paper.
This woman SO needs to be removed from the bench. Seriously. Granted, there may be good reasons to deny a 17-year old enlistment, but "I'm an anti-war moron who uses my position to advance my moonbat agenda" isn't one of them.

Now, I know what you're thinking. What a brave soul - to take a stand and use her twisted little pea-brain free-thinking mind to divert the purpose of the court take a stand. How can I thank her?

Well, I've got the answer for you!

To let her know what you think of her decision to completely toss out her responsibilities as a judge, you can contact her at:

Mail:

Monterey Park, CA 91754

Phone:

Didn't see an email directory, but if someone finds one, please leave it in the comments section.

Be sure to restrain yourselves, folks - I seem to remember threatening or otherwise harrassing a judge is bad ju-ju -- even if they don't have any respect for the sanctity of their position.

Oh, and in California, the Commission on Judicial Performance has the responsibility of "investigating complaints of judicial misconduct and judicial incapacity and for disciplining state judges."

Their abilities include taking action by:

Removing or censuring a judge or former judge for "action that constitutes willful misconduct in office, persistent failure or inability to perform the judge's duties, habitual intemperance in the use of intoxicants or drugs, or conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice that brings the judicial office into disrepute";

Publicly or privately "admonishing a judge or former judge found to have engaged in improper action or dereliction of duty"; and

They can bar censured judges from future positions in any CA state court.

Sounds good to me. You can contact them at:

NYC Bomber Writes Letter to Congress?

Maybe:

Police are investigating letters that arrived at congressional offices that contained a photo of the New York Times Square military recruiting office before it was bombed and including the words "We did it."
Reportedly, this little love note has gone to at least eight Congressional offices. According to Senator Feinstein's:

"A few offices on the House side have received a letter today addressed to `Members of Congress' with a picture of a man standing in front of the Times Square recruiting station that was bombed in New York today with the statement `We did it.' He is standing in front of it with his arms spread out and he's attached his political manifesto."
Clearly this guy has a screw loose. Not so much because of the bombing, but because he's thinking that sending something to Congress will produce action

Terror Thursday...

The slimeball who tossed an explosive device at the NYC Armed Forces Recruiting office may have been caught on tape - not really a surprise in Times Square. Fox News has more photos, and video here

And all the way on the Left Coast, police found pipe bombs in a UC Davis dorm. They have a student in custody.

And across the Atlantic, in Jerusalem, there has been another attack by terrorist gunmen.

And the day ain't over yet...

Make Incendiary Devices, Not War

The more acceptance there is for the anti-war idiots (or apathy, for that matter), the more likely it is that these things are going to happen:

Explosion Hits Military Recruiting Station at New York's Times Square

NEW YORK — An explosive device caused minor damage to an empty military recruiting station in Times Square early Thursday, shaking guests in hotel rooms high above.

Police blocked off the area to investigate the explosion, which occurred at about 3:45 a.m., shattering the station's glass entryway. No one was injured.

"If it is something that's directed toward American troops than it's something that's taken very seriously and is pretty unfortunate," said Army Capt. Charlie Jaquillard, who is the commander of Army recruiting in Manhattan.

More here.

Although this one was minor, and no one was hurt, that is not the way these things always go. The anti-war movement has a history of violence. It's all peace, love, and happiness - if you agree with them. If not, look out.

Take, for instance, these lovely little bits of joy you may not have heard about:

-- Molotov cocktails in Chicago on March 20, 2003

-- Multiple instances at a March, 21, 2003 anarchist anti-war rally in Athens, and again on April 16, 2003

-- The cache of molotov cocktails left by anti-war protesters after a rally in San Francisco in 2003

-- Multiple instances in the NYC area in 2005

-- Generally being idiots and trying to pry open a fence at the Port of Olympia in 2006

-- A four-on-one sneak attack and assault on an OEF Hero in Canada in 2007

Again and again they prove that they're twisted little cowards. Take a good look at the anti-war movement, and you'll soon find out that hidden beneath that "Give Peace a Chance" crap is a socialist / communist agenda, and a potential for deadly violence if you don't agree with them.

Bottomfeeders, all.

UPDATE:

David, at the Thunder Run, is asking (rhetorically) if the Moonbats have gone too far :

And while a spokesperson for Homeland Security wouldn’t comment on whether this explosion was related to terrorism the act in itself was a terror attack…an attack in my opinion against those very people who defend us against terror, the U.S. Military.

The left is already in a tizzy over the event worried that it’s going to cause a backlash against them...
And Ron Winter wonders what they may do next:
Considering that Code Pink's infiltration of the Berkeley City Council has resulted in unprecedented official support for its attacks on the US Marine recruiting station in that city, and IVAW is mimicking Kerry like an aged shadow, it is worth questioning whether more vicious attacks on members of our government are in the planning stages.

Mother Moonbat Packs It In?

Cindy Sheehan is reportedly calling it quits...

"This is my resignation letter as the 'face' of the American anti-war movement," Sheehan wrote. "I am going to take whatever I have left and go home. I am going to go home and be a mother to my surviving children and try to regain some of what I have lost."
In her letter, posted at the uber-liberal blog Daily Kos, Sheehan says that her relationship with her husband dissolved, her relationship with her children is 'strained,' and she's broke.

Poor baby. And of course, none of that is her fault...

"I was the darling of the so-called left as long as I limited my protests to George Bush and the Republican Party. Of course, I was slandered and libeled by the right as a 'tool' of the Democratic Party." Sheehan wrote. "However, when I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the 'left' started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used."
If you can stomach it, you can read the rest here.

So long, Cindy - don't let the door hit you in the keester on the way out.

Moonbat Watch: It's All Love and Peace...Until it Isn't

Ah, the days of yore....when happy, gentle pacifists used to sing...

"All we are saying....is give peace a chance..."

They might have to rewrite that one - and a couple of their anti-war slogans, too.

I'd suggest "All we are saying....is give psychotic anti-war bigoted freaks a chance...."

And instead of "Make Love....not War," how about "Throw Punches, not Flowers."

Wondering what I'm talking about? Well, none other than gentle peace activist Andrew Stone. Good ol' Andy has developed a new tactic in the noble crusade to stop this darned illegal war.

Stalking.

Here's what one of the people he assaulted, UMW student Richard Reed Pannell, had to say about our intrepid psychopath, after he'd dropped in for a little "love-in":
...Later that day we found a list of names on the front porch, complete with addresses, boys and girls, all members of the college Republicans. I was 9th on the list. I contacted a few of the people on the list and only one had received a visit from this guy, and they hadn't even answered the door because they knew of his affiliation and what he was coming to say. For lack of better words, we were pretty unsuspecting. His arraignment is on March 1st, and our school newspaper is doing a large investigation of his ties to other organizations on campus, etc. For now, we're all pretty scared about what this guy'll do now that he's back on the streets...
Aw, come on.....he's anti-war. When are they ever violent? What's that? All the time? Oh.

Make sure you visit Michelle Malkin's blog to get the whole story. Don't be fooled. Most "peace" activists are anything but.

Ah, the anti-war crowd. Gotta love 'em, eh?

What are you doing for St. Patrick's Day this year?

Me, I'm planning on joining the Gathering of Eagles.

NATIONAL PATRIOTIC CARAVAN COUNTERS ANTI-WAR EFFORT

From California to Washington, D.C. March 8th – March 17th

A national patriotic, pro-troop caravan will cross the nation, traveling from California to Washington, D.C. to show support for U.S. troops serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The "THESE COLORS DON'T RUN" national caravan (organized and sponsored by the pro-troop non-profit group Move America Forward – http://www.moveamericaforward.org/) will depart San Francisco, California on the morning of Thursday, March 8, 2007, traversing the length of the state and then heading across the nation. The patriotic caravan will feature stops across the nation in major cities where pro-troop rallies will take place.

Leading the caravan will be Blue Star Mother Deborah Johns, whose son William is serving his 3rd tour of duty in Iraq; Gold Star Mother Debra Argel Bastian whose son, Derek, died in Operation Iraqi Freedom; Gold Star Father Joseph Williams whose son, Michael, died in Operation Iraqi Freedom; and John Ubaldi – a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan).

At each rally, participants will bring American flags – either a homemade one they created themselves, a store-bought flag, or a flag that has a special significance, history or meaning. The flags will be collected at each stop and brought to Washington, D.C. where they will be displayed to create a giant "Flag City" on Saturday, March 17, 2007.

The participants of Move America Forward's "THESE COLORS DON'T RUN" caravan will join with several other patriotic and pro-troop organizations for a giant patriotic rally in Washington, D.C. on March 17th. Among the participating groups MAF is proud to support in this display of patriotism are: Free Republic, Gathering of Eagles, Vets for Victory and Vets For Truth.

"There's been way too much negativity and doom-and-gloom mentality in this nation about our nation, our values and the missions our troops are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Melanie Morgan, Chairman of Move America Forward.

"We're sick and tired of the shameful subversiveness of the anti-war crowd and we decided it's time to give Americans a chance to respond with a positive, uplifting and patriotic response," Morgan said.

The Anti-war crows plans to assemble AT THE VIETNAM MEMORIAL WALL. The idea of allowing this crowd to assemble at that wall is nauseating - especially given their past performance, during which Hero Joshua Sparling was threatened, insulted, and spat at.

If you are able, please consider making the trip to D.C. for St. Patrick's Day.

My Two Cents - The Enemy Within: Abetting with Apathy

I, and a lot of other people, have been saying it for a long time. The "Anti-war" crowd, no matter how much they'll tell you they support the troops, inevitably show themselves to be anti-troop.

There are the more subtle methods - inviting speakers to events, a poorly-worded headline. And then there are the not-so-subtle methods - a nasty email, a nasty blog comment, efforts to kick recruiters off of campuses, spitting, and assault.

The anti-war crowd will tell you that the spitting incidents never happened following Vietnam - that spitting on troops was a myth. They'll tell you that they've never documented it happening. Of course not - they've never talked with anyone that got spit on. But I've heard from vets who say it absolutely did happen - to them.

It's happening now.

There have been precious few incidents reported in the MSM - not surprising. There was the airport incident, the mat incident, and now a hero who ran into their hospitality at weekend's anti-war rally in D.C. What makes this even more disgusting is that this particular hero was already privy to the anti-war crowd's method of supporting the troops.

Joshua Sparling. The name should be familiar to readers of this and other milblogs. Joshua Sparling is the Hero who got a little love note from the anti-war crowd some time ago, as he was recovering in Walter Reed:

Dear soldier,
Have a great time in the war and have a great time dieing(sic) in the war.

Miguel
P.S. - DIE

In the aftermath, Sparling received thousands of cards from well-wishers.

The sender? Well, Michael Crook of Forsake the Troops fame claimed responsibility. His reprehensible website was subsequently taken down by the very people crook derided. Ah, sweet justice. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving dirtbag. The site that URL now takes you to is much more pleasant. He allegedly put up new sites - opposethetroops.com, citizensagainstthetroops.org, and disownthetroops.com, but as of this posting, I didn't find any of them up and running. If there is any justice in this world, those were nuked too - and so will anything else the worm puts up.

But I digress. Joshua Sparling attended the rally this weekend. He's made quite a recovery, despite losing a leg to the wounds that put him in Walter Reed. And how does the "we support the troops but not the war" riffraff greet him?

Michelle Malkin has the answer - By spitting on him.

Sure, the blogosphere will be ablaze today. People will again send messages of support to Sparling, and for a few days the anti-war crowd will be persona non grata.

But what about after that?

The American hoi polloi seems to have a collective case of ADD. We can't even remember back to September 11. We can't remember the President's speech, telling us that Iraq would be a long fight. That the War on Terror would span generations. We sure can't take the time to remember back a few decades, to the death of Robert Dean Stethem, to hijacked airplanes, to PanAm Flight 103, to Americans held hostage in an embassy for over a year.

It is not enough to just react to the more flagrant incidents. It's not enough to send cards to one Hero being spit on. The anti-war crowd does this every single day. They don't stop. And but for a now-shrinking crowd of people who understand why we're in Iraq - why we have to be in Iraq - support for the troops is often relegated to a magnet on a car. Don't get me wrong - the magnets are, at the very least, a reminder. But just having the magnet isn't enough.

We cannot stop at just reacting to the boldest of the moonbats. Every single time I come across someone bashing the troops, I say something. Every single time. It doesn't matter where it happens. At work, at the store, at family events - everywhere, every time. I force myself to when it's inconvenient or uncomfortable. I do it because the people they're bashing are willing to die for me. The absolute least I can do is open my mouth when someone's insulting them.

I'm not perfect. I'm not the icon of troop support. But I do something. I don't just say I support them - I live like I support them. It should be a no-brainer. But it isn't.

And let's face it - the anti-war crowd is largely composed of cowards. My husband, during Desert Storm, faced down a crowd of anti-war protesters at the college we attended (I wasn't there, unfortunately). How? By just opening his mouth. He called them morons, and a few other things, and they skulked away.

I faced down one at the store once. It took one sentence.

When the anti-war crowd visits this blog, the most frequent posts are drive-bys. One nasty comment, and they never come back to face the music.

In a recent discussion, someone told me that "none of the troops believe they should be over there."

"Not true," I said. "Many of them understand exactly why they're over there."

"Well, some of them don't. And people don't support them."

"True. Maybe they'd all understand why they're over there if people over here did."

It became a discussion of how "nothing good" was happening over there.

Funny thing, though - when I fired off a list of what had been done, I was told that my ill-armed opponent "didn't know that."

What a surprise.

The point is, the anti-war crowd gains momentum when people allow them to. At the beginning of all this, the anti-war crowd could gain no purchase. We simply wouldn't tolerate it. Remember, they tried to oppose Enduring Freedom, too - they were given the clear message that it wasn't acceptable.

There are some very real dangers in the anti-war movement. For starters, it's heavily populated by socialists and communists. If you don't think that those two philosophies are still a danger in the world, you've been living under a rock. Those ideologies are very real threats today - the only problem is, the threat isn't coming from outside - it's coming from our own country.

The other danger is that the anti-war crowd again has control of the media, and has the ear of legislators. Want a similarity to Vietnam? Well, there it is.

If you support the troops, I ask you to make a promise to yourself. If you don't send one letter of thanks, or care package, to our troops; if you don't send one dime to organizations that do; if you do nothing else - promise to speak up.

Do not remain silent. Do not abet with apathy. What these people do is NOT okay. It is NOT acceptable. The solution is not to accept unacceptable behavior - when you see it, say something.

Because if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. And if you're part of the problem, you are abetting the enemy.

UPDATE: Michelle Malkin has an update on what the dirtbag moonbats did during their "peaceful" demonstration. Funny, I never thought of vandalism as "peaceful." I'm telling you, South Park's Eric Cartman has it right.

How Low Can the Anti-War Crowd Get?

You'd think I'd know better than to ask that question.

The following was forwarded to me by Debey, known to all of us at Soldiers' Angels as Gunnar's Mom...

There is a War Protest with a cemetery display at my son's college here in St Louis. They have tomb stones with the names of those that were killed in the war. Alex went through and removed the names of those he know who would not want to be associated with this type of protest. As he told the student who organized this you do not have the permission of those killed or of their families to use their name to represent your cause, I am needing this out so that any family who has a loved in who was killed in Iraq if you want to call or write the Dean of Students and let them know how upsetting this is to you please do so or email me and I will with your premission remove the name for you please email me privately...

That email was sent by Jan Lang, founder of Marine Comfort Quilts, and the mother of a Marine Hero who has safely returned from duty in Iraq. Marine Comfort Quilts has completed over 1700 quits that have been sent to the families who have lost a loved one in Iraq. Please contact me for Jan's email address.

Need to know how disgusting this display is?
Here is a picture of the referenced display (from a previous event), organized by the St. Louis Instead of War Coalition:

This is typical of the response that has been received to requests for removal:

Dear Ms. M---:

Per your request, I have seen to it that the tombstone with the name of your loved one has been taken down.

Please let me say that I am extremely sorry for your loss. The students who set up the memorial on our campus did not mean to add to your pain. They were simply trying to bring honor to those soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve those freedoms that we enjoy.

Hmmmmmm...somehow, I don't think so. This hero's widow didn't think so, either:

Mr. Brady,
I am responding to your comment "They were simply trying to bring honor to those soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve those freedoms that we enjoy."

It is my understanding that there was a tombstone with simply D----- M---- on it. (Name withheld pending permission from this hero's widow) No branch of service, no rank. Exactly how were you honoring a "soldier" when you excluded his military experience? My husband EARNED his rank by being in the Marine Corps for 13 years and doing his job well. His intention was to be in for 20 years. Your students erased his dedication to defending their freedoms by erasing his military background. Your students have made him just a name. Really I can't even dream up something as distasteful. I would not have called if I didn't feel this was truly just a display for visual impact....by no means "honoring" anyone. Please save your empty condolences and sarcasm.

And if you haven't lost your lunch yet, not only do these "tombstones" completely eliminate any reference to rank or branch of service, but our Heroes are sharing space on them with Iraqi names, as well.

Some are particularly disturbing - like this one removed from the display. This is how these people saw fit to "honor" a member of the
Soldiers' Angels family:

For the record, that's PFC Gunnar Becker, 2nd Platoon "Bandits," Bravo Company 2/63 AR Battalion, US Army

Another picture of the display:

Freedom of expression is one thing. This is...I don't know what this is. Wrong, is all I can come up with. Wrong, wrong, wrong. This kind of thing needs to be addressed. The Respect for Fallen Heroes Act is a start - more information on that below.

The two pictures above come from Jan's album of photos of the display and some of the stones they've been able to remove:

I spent 3 hours at the College today removing tombstones. I do not know the name of the person who I spoke with from this group but they "OWN" the tombstone and I was told that the Pentagon release the name so that makes the name available to them for their use. SO while the school is removing the names per the families wishes if they send the school a email, the school would not allow me to take them with me. I have a picture of every one that I was able to get taken down. The display was missing 300 names as we were told they are on permanent display where the exit started. The display does come down on Thursday March 30, 2006 at 3:30 after Taps is played...

Here's some background:
It appears that the tombstone display actually is borrowed from this group: http://www.insteadofwar.org
There is a picture of the display at a previous event.

So at this point I think everyone needs to email the group and also email their Senator and Congressman regarding the pending legislation regarding the upcoming Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act to have these such displays be added to that legislation. Below is a copy of what I have been sending, plus the link to sign the petition.

Petitions can be signed at

I encourage you to forward this site to your friends and family and ask them to help protect military families.

Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act is upcoming legislation, I do not feel this bill goes far enough. I believe that it should also include the use of our Fallen's names on crosses and tombstone in protest against the war without the family’s written permission. The visual impact would be the same if they put up 2400+ cross/tombstones without the names. Our men and women have died to protect the right of free speech but they have not given them the right to assume those who have died agree with their protest. The use of the names of our fallen give the impression they would have supported the protest.

If you have a family member or loved one whose name may be on one of these, and you would like to have their name removed from the display (which, as I understand it, is a travelling display), please either use the contact information above, or email me, and I'll put you in touch with someone who can help.

The anti-war crowd, unfortunately, never ceases to sicken me with the complete lack of respect they show our Heroes and their families. Just one more reason I don't buy the "I'm anti-war, not anti-troop" line.

Here is further information on the Respect for Fallen Heroes Act (forwarded by Sara of Soldiers' Angels:

Rogers Proposes the Respect for Fallen Heroes Act
While attending the funeral of a Michigan soldier who died of combat wounds suffered in Iraq, protestors attempted to disrupt the funeral by shouting vile and harassing slogans at the family and other mourners. Military families mourning the loss of a loved one killed in the defense of our nation deserve the right to say their final goodbyes in peace. America honors and respects our soldiers, and none more than those who die defending freedom and our nation.

Next week, I will be introducing federal legislation to protect grieving military families by banning protestors from military funerals. This legislation, the Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act, will prohibit demonstrating one hour before and one hour after the service for a fallen solider and keep the protesters 500 feet from the grieving family. No family burying a son or daughter, a husband or wife, a brother or sister, should be faced with the insults, verbal attacks, and intimidation that these protestors were screaming or displaying on signs. This common sense legislation will help to protect military families in their most difficult hour and is narrowly tailored to fit within the time and place restrictions consistently upheld by the Supreme Court.

Giving citizens an opportunity to participate in the process and support the legislation, I launched an on-line petition. The petition will allow citizens to express honor and respect for our American soldiers who make the ultimate sacrifice for the nation, as well as support for the people they love and leave behind. The petition and comments from citizens will be presented to the House Veterans Affairs Committee at an April 6 hearing in Washington. Petitions can be signed at www.mikerogers.house.gov/fallenheroes.aspx

I encourage you to forward this site to your friends and family and ask them to help protect military families.

Further info from Jan:

The exhibit comes down this afternoon and after talking with the students involved yesterday I think they understand the families side better. As I told them, I just don't think they thought this all out very well. They failed to see how this could effect a Vet's attending school there and failed to think of the Families feelings. If nothing else it allowed dialog on the subject. The person from http://www.insteadofwar.org told me this exhibit was the same as the Traveling Viet Nam Wall in the sense that it was honoring those that were killed.

My signature is already on the Petition. I urge you to do the same. I echo Jan's sentiments, though - there are other exploitations of our nation's Heroes which should be dealt with. Freedom of speech can be exercised without harming the families of the fallen. I also think that certain actions against military members (ex., spitting on them) need to be specifically addressed in legislation. My personal opinion is that the military should be treated, in these siutations, in the same way that antidiscrimination's protected classes are treated. Can you imagine what would happen if the KKK showed up at the funeral of an African-American to make similar displays? Hurling the type of drivel that Phelps' crew does? Racial slurs and racially motivated attacks aren't freedom of speech / expression - they're hate crimes. Certain actions aimed at our military heroes should be treated the same way.
