OK, That Was Interesting....

No, I haven't fallen off of the face of the Earth...

Although the blog did for a few days.

Due to some technical issues, I was unable to get anything posted, but things look to be working once again, and I will have new posts up on Sunday.

Gotta love Blogger.

My Independence Day

OK, this is a very rare event for me, but it looks like I actually may be taking a few days away from blogging...

Hubby, the dogs, and I are off to see a little of the great country our Heroes protect and defend. We're off to do some camping for the next few days. If I happen to get some internet access somewhere, I'll post some pictures from the trip. If not, we'll be back this weekend, and I'll get back to posting then.

Not sure what I'll do without a couple of hours blogging everyday, but I'll try to be strong.

Happy Independence Day to all!

Posting Delay Today...

Whole lot of stuff to do this morning, so posting will be up later this afternoon.

While you're waiting for me to get back to the computer, why not stop at Michael Yon's site for the latest installment in the "Death or Glory" series:

"The shepherds know every rock and cranny out there, and they know where the explosives are. Treat those shepherds bad, and soldiers get blown up. Treat them with humanity and respect, and they can be business partners."

One. Freaking. Million

At some point today, this blog will register its one millionth visitor.

Wow.

Can't believe we're going to hit a million. Thanks to all of you who stop by regularly, and those of you who just pass through.

I'll post links to some of my favorite posts - and more popular rants - later today.

********************************

Update: 4:16 pm:

Woohoo!!

********************************

Some of my favorite posts / favorite rants (in no particular order):

My Merry Moonbat poems (Part I, Part II). I'm not much for writing poetry, but these came easy, and I was pretty proud of them.

My Two Cents - these posts are perhaps the most "me"; Most of the time, they just flow, but sometimes they're a little tough to write. Those are the ones that are the most important to me, usually written when I'm outraged at something, and sometimes I find myself going, "Yeesh, do I really want to say that?" But the answer that I usually come to is that since being politically correct is doing such damage to our country, I'm going to try and avoid it whenever possible. Those posts are rarely politically correct. Some of my favorites:

Shame on You, Senator Kennedy! (My first real rant)

Hamas Rising

The Gathering Storm

These are also usually my most popular posts, oddly enough. What's really amazing to me is that my most recent, "Reality Check," wasn't what I thought was my best work - and it was the most widely read one I've done. It was linked at places like The Jawa Report, The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler, The Thunder Run, and others, I've had email requests to be allowed to send it to people, to repost it...it certainly got a lot of mileage, and I was thrilled that people liked it. It also bolsters me to know that there are people out there who get it, who believe the way that I do.

The Camp Lejeune Ballerinas post - it was wonderful to see how the blogging community came together to ensure that these little girls had a very special ballet recital, and I was proud to be a part of it.

I'd love to hear from some of my regular readers (and those passing through) - what are your favorite posts? What keeps you coming back? What do you / don't you like about the blog?

Muzzling the Military

Michael Yon has written recently of the increased difficulty he's had when working with the Army brass in Iraq. He's noted repeatedly that they seem to be making things as difficult as possible for those who are trying to get the truth out - those who are bringing attention to all of the good work being done in Iraq, and the character and quality of our Heroes.

What the heck is going on? It didn't make a lick of sense to me...until I saw this:

Army Tightens Rules on GI Blogs, E-Mail

"Tightens" is an understatement. While the old rules required a check when posting any information about operations, the new rules amount to a gag order. Soldiers must submit anything placed in a public forum to "an OPSEC review prior to publishing"- blog posts, emails, message board postings, letters....the possibilities are endless.

Failure to do so could result in actions including court-martial, "administrative, disciplinary, contractual, or criminal action."

And as if that wasn't enough, the new rules expand the personnel affected to include "all Soldiers, Department of the Army (DA) Civilians, Department of Defense (DOD) contractors, and family members."

Now seems a pretty good time to state that I am not, nor have I ever been, in any branch of the U.S. military. I am not the family member of any active duty military personnel. Pure civilian here. I can say what I like....for now.

The policy's author, Major Ray Ceralde, is quick to minimize the intrusiveness of the new policy:
"It is not practical to check all communication, especially private communication..."

Maybe so, but that creates a new problem - inconsistency in enforcement. It's a point that the Major emphasizes with the following:

"Some units may require that soldiers register their blog with the unit for identification purposes with occasional spot checks after an initial review. Other units may require a review before every posting."

OK....but how do you decide what to check, how often to check, and what is a concern? With the consequences as serious as they are for violation, how do you, as an officer, manage the new policy while you're supposed to be fighting a war?

Isn't it easier, and more consistent, to just forbid your Soldiers to blog, or post in message boards, altogether?

David, at The Thunder Run, writes, This is it friends...the milblogs are dead and along with it, all public support for the good things being done every day by our troops on the ground, and we have only the brass to thank for it. What Al Qaida in Iraq couldn't do with VBIEDs they did with a word processor and a complete lack of understanding of the need to win the information war.

Matt of BlackFive says, "The soldiers who will attempt to fly under the radar and post negative items about the military, mission, and commanders will continue to do so under the new regs. The soldiers who've been playing ball the last few years, the vast, VAST, majority will be reduced. In my mind, this reg will accomplish the exact opposite of its intent. The good guys are restricted and the bad continue on..." His complete post, with updates and links to what others are saying, is here.

The ramifications of Army Regulation 530--1: Operations Security (OPSEC) (.pdf file) are far-reaching. Letters home, letters to troop supporters like Soldiers' Angels, blog postings, electronic messages, comments to others' posts, all of it could be under the scope.

As a Soldier stateside, let alone in a war zone, would you want to deal with this? Sure, there might be a Soldier here or there that might post something that would be of concern, but don't we trust our troops enough to believe that they wouldn't want to put anything out there that would pose a risk to their military brothers and sisters? And how many of them self-edit what is sent to family and friends - not because of fear of reprisal, but simply to keep them from worrying?

Far more likely than a mountain of oversight is the path of least resistance - Soldiers will stop blogging on their own, or officers will forbid anything that requires oversight.

The one big similarity to Vietnam and Iraq has been the loss of ground in the Information War. And now the Army is not only conceding defeat - they're regulating it. Milblogs have been a prime source of positive information - a primary weapon against negative media and moonbat hype.

Take away guns from law-abiding citizens, and only criminals have guns.

Silence those who support the war, and the only voices heard will be those who malign the troops and seek to undermine the war. Regulated defeat in the Information War.

It is the ultimate insult - and a tragic irony - that those who would bleed or die to protect freedom of speech for others appear to have the least right to it themselves.

David notes, "This should be a major topic of discussion at the CENTCOM Discussion at the upcoming Milblog Conference this Saturday."

Indeed. I'll be there, and you can be sure that I'm looking forward to that discussion.

How Low Will a Moonbat Go?

If you guessed that they'd go as low as handing out death threats to a toddler, unfortunately, you're right:

From Froggy, posted at BlackFive:

We all know that lefty trolls can be a real inconvenience at times, but a very special troll named Deborah Frisch has taken trolling down a very dark road. Jeff Goldstein is the very insightful conservative blogger who writes at Protein Wisdom and Dr. Frisch (did I mention she's a psych[o] professor at the University of Arizona?) has repeatedly and quite disturbing levied DEATH
THREATS
against Jeff's 2 year old child....
Some of the prof's lovely sentiments:

[...] as I said elsewhere, if I woke up tomorrow and learned that
someone else had shot you and your “tyke” it wouldn’t slow me down one
iota. You aren’t “human” to me...
Ooh. Two year old boy. Sounds hot. You live in Colorado, I see. Hope no one Jon-Benets your baby...
Are you still married to the woman you humped
to produce the toddler

Give your pathetic progeny (I sure hope that mofo got good genes from his mama!) a big fat tongue-filled kiss from me! LOTS AND LOTS OF SALIVA from Auntie MOONBAT, if you don’t mind!...
Just my two cents: The pathetic jeffy boy goldstein plays the jew
card 24/7. Didn’t you notice?

THIS IS A CESSPOOL!!! GET OUT WHILE YOU
CAN!!!!

JEFF!!! DRINK THE KOOLAID AND LET YOUR WIFE RAISE THE little
Goldstein Junior!

Doesn't much like anyone from Colorado, actually:

I am SHAKING, I tell you, SHAKING!!! in my boots at the prosect at an FBI and/or state police trooper tromping down my driveway to see if I was a threat to the progeny of the pissant name of Jeff “pissant” Goldstein of the pathetic, neutered, sissified, state of Colorado. I don’t give a rat’s ass whether the pissant’s progeny live or die, but I have no intention of snuffing the mofo’s chillen myself.
Are you ticked off enough yet? How about this - Froggy has confirmed that she is, indeed, a faculty professor at the University of Arizona - in Psychology. To file a formal complaint, as Froggy has, here is the contact information for Al Kazniak, the head of the Psychology Department:

1503 E University Blvd.
Building 68
Tucson, AZ 85721 (map)
Tel: (520) 621-7448
Fax: (520) 621-9306
psychology@email.arizona.edu

Frisch's friends have now put Jeff's site under two denial of service attacks. As of this post, it's still down.

Please go here for the full story on this lunatic - and send your complaint to the U. of AZ. Bloggers, please post and link.

Just a thought - if this were one of the conservative bloggers making these attacks and threats, or a conservative professor, exactly how long do you think it would take before the University took action?

UPDATE #1: Moonbat Boo-hoo: According to Frisch's site, she's resigned:

white flag
I wrote some inflammatory comments at a blog by a guy named Jeff Goldstein called protein wisdom that infuriated many bloggers and commenters. Many of these bloggers emailed my boss at the University of Arizona to tell on me.

In hindsight, the things I wrote were over the line of nastiness. I apologize to Mr. Goldstein.

I have resigned from the University of Arizona so there is no need for other enraged people to write to administrators there. I am a temporary worker there and I am in Oregon for the summer.

Some blogs have posted comments that I perceive to be physically threatening. I have contacted the FBI and the Pajamas Media staff to determine how to proceed with this aspect of this unbelievable experience.

My intention in this post is to de-escalate the situation. The comments that started this all were nasty, not threatening. But I feel very threatened by the response.

Jeff - I lost my job. You won. Could you call off the troops?...
Typical Moonbat - not "to file a complaint regarding inappropriate behavior," oh, no - "to tell on me" she says. And the comments were nasty, not threatening. So, basically, it's OK?

I wonder if she told the FBI she threatened Jeff's kid - or that she was "shaking" at the prospect of them coming to talk to her about what she said? Hmm....probably not.

I wonder if that resignation debate was front and center before people started complaining? Hmm....probably not.

Oh - she issued a clarification, too:

clarification re: white flag
I just got an email that said:
You got what you f***ing deserve. It's only a positive thing for the country; one less liberal warping the minds of American students in tax-payer funded colleges. NO ONE feels sorry for you, you've done this all to yourself. Ha,ha!

The point of resigning is that it is something I was thinking of doing anyway. I want to stay in Eugene, OR where moonbats rule instead of living in Tucson, AZ where moonbats are in the minority. So my point is not that you should feel sorry for me but rather you should lay off the stalking like the emails to the head of the psych department at the University of Arizona, the nasty, threatening comments at the various rightwingnut blogs that have jumped on this "story."

The department head said he would deal with this on Monday. No one has formally accepted my resignation yet. I've just submitted it. I understand there are many, many people out there who will want to know how the University of Arizona responds to my offer to give up my temporary gig teaching psychology next year. I will let you all know on Monday or Tuesday.

I'm just asking y'all to leave me alone and go stalk another moonbat.
Let's make sure the University of Arizona accepts that resignation, shall we? Keep your comments going - but please, keep them civilized.

UPDATE #2: My email has gone to Mr. Kazniak. I'll let you know if I get a response.

UPDATE #3: Protein Wisdom is back up.

UPDATE #4: Deb is still distinctly lacking in anything resembling acceptance of responsibility - judge for yourself here, here, here, and here. For a bit of good news, her resignation has apparently been accepted...

Thanks to the Dread Pundit Bluto for putting the Pirates on the case - Yarrr.

Hate in the Comments Section....

I remember my first hate comment - my first hatemail - my first banned commenter...ah, nostalgia.

Over at "My Life as a Military Spouse," one of those lovely little bits of ignorance was posted. And our friendly neighborhood military spouse is looking for some commenters to counter this:

And how many suicide bombers were there before the US invasion and occupation?Zero.Face the truth: The US has torched off a three-way civil war that will kill more people and ruin more lives than Saddam Hussein could even dream of.
Sigh. And that was left anonymously, of course.

My two cents (dime's worth, really) are already up in her comments section, as are BlackFive's - stop by and join the fray.

Man, what is it this week??? Is it a full moon? Can't tell 'cause it's been raining here for most of the last week....
