More of the "U"sual "N"onsense

Just another of the many reasons I say we should boot the Useless Nimrods out of New York, and start our own alliance of friendly nations with a spine...

From FOX News:

U.N. Anti-Blasphemy Resolution Curtails Free Speech, Critics Say

Friday, October 03, 2008
By Jennifer Lawinski

Religious groups and free-speech advocates are banding together to fight a United Nations resolution they say is being used to spread Sharia law to the Western world and to intimidate anyone who criticizes Islam.

The non-binding resolution on “Combating the Defamation of Religion” is intended to curtail speech that offends religion -- particularly Islam.

Pakistan and the Organization of the Islamic Conference introduced the measure to the U.N. Human Rights Council in 1999. It was amended to include religions other than Islam, and it has passed every year since.

In 2005, Yemen successfully brought a similar resolution before the General Assembly. Now the 192-nation Assembly is set to vote on it again.

The non-binding Resolution 62/145, which was adopted in 2007, says it “notes with deep concern the intensification of the campaign of defamation of religions and the ethnic and religious profiling of Muslim minorities in the aftermath of 11 September 2001.”

It “stresses the need to effectively combat defamation of all religions and incitement to religious hatred, against Islam and Muslims in particular.”

How Scary is This???

Britain Adopts Islamic Law, Gives Sharia Courts Full Power to Rule on Civil Cases
Islamic law has been officially adopted in Britain, with sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.

The government has quietly sanctioned the powers for sharia judges to rule on cases ranging from divorce and financial disputes to those involving domestic violence.

Rulings issued by a network of five sharia courts are enforceable with the full power of the judicial system, through county courts or the country's High Court, a part of its Supreme Court system.

Previously, the rulings of sharia courts in Britain could not be enforced, and depended on voluntary compliance among Muslims.

Politicians and church leaders expressed concerns that this could mark the beginnings of a “parallel legal system” based on sharia for some British Muslims.

Dominic Grieve, the shadow home secretary, said: “If it is true that these tribunals are passing binding decisions in the areas of family and criminal law, I would like to know which courts are enforcing them because I would consider such action unlawful. British law is absolute and must remain so.”

Oh Maryland, PC Maryland...

Report: Maryland Students to Get PC Lesson on Islam

A textbook monitoring group said that Maryland middle and high school students will be required to read about Islamic teachings that have been dumbed down and are products of political correctness.

According to the New York Examiner, a new report issued by the American Textbook Council said that administrators who approved books for use in the Montgomery County school district caved into pressure by pro-Islamic groups seeking to present a less violent interpretation of Islam.

Gilbert Sewall, director of the council, stated that, for example, the definition of jihad has gone through "amazing cultural reorchestration" in textbooks, losing any connotation of violence, the Examiner wrote.

Other terms, such as sharia law, have been adjusted or removed from lessons to avoid what he called "inconvenient truths."

Inconvenient truths....like the wealth of terrorists that practice it. Next stop...burqas in the classroom. This stuff makes me sick.

Hug of War: Students in Arizona Fight for Their Right to Embrace

From Fox News:

It may make sense that certain public displays of affection should be off limits for junior high students, but a ban on hugs?

It has come to that at an Arizona school district, where administrators are taking a hard line on student-to-student embraces, MyFOXPhoenix.com reports.

Mesa Public Schools always had rules against public displays of affection by students, but the administrators recently took additional steps to remind students what types of hugs and other activities, such as kissing, are unacceptable, according to MyFOXPhoenix.com.

Next in the crosshairs: the phrase "Have a nice day." The rest of this idiocy is here.

It's Frickin' Chicken, For Crying Out Loud!

In the latest attempt to prevent anyone from ever being offended by anything...

From Fox News:

A Pennsylvania convenience-store chain is taking heat from critics who say its new billboard campaign promoting a fried chicken sandwich contains foul language.

Sheetz unveiled the "Crispy Frickin' Chicken" billboards at the beginning of this month.
There is now - believe it or not - an outcry. Some days, it really just isn't worth chewing through the restraints.

I'm sorry, but I must have missed the part in the Constitution where every possible word that could ever offend anyone was banned from ever being used in anything.

Plus good / Double plus good gets closer every day.

Political Correctness Run Amok - Legos are Evil

There, I've said it.

Yep, Legos are evil. When kids play with Legos in school, they learn (be strong) the values of a capitalist society. When kids play with Legos in school, they do things like build bigger buildings than a less creative kid. They build different buildings. They argue over the cool pieces. For the love of all that's good and decent, five to nine-year-old kids are learning individualism!

Thank goodness a Seattle school learned this. Thank goodness they re-educated students by taking the Legos away until these kids learned social justice. Thank goodness they smothered evils like creativity and individual expression, and made sure that moving forward, all Lego creations will be a standard size. (Bravely, they've now returned the Legos - now that the "re-education" of these young rebels is complete).

Goodness knows we don't want a bunch of creative, intelligent kids out there.

That would be far too American.

Think I'm kidding? Don't you wish.

Political Correctness Goes Awry Again...

In an attempt to once again enforce political correctness, schools in Washington State are banning negativity at sports events.

They have "Boo Police," who monitor chanting and cheers to ensure that they're not too negative.

On the banned list:

booing
disrespectful chants or yells
foot stomping
waving when a player is shooting a free throw
full face paint
"#1" foam fingers

They allege that the ban is necessary because rowdy fans were causing fights.

So why not arrest the people that cause the fights? Naaah, we'll just use it as an opportunity to ban anything that makes anyone feel bad. You can see the video here

The big danger in rules like this is that they start to incorporate group thinking. Society becomes paralyzed because everyone is socialized to never criticize anyone or anything; never make anyone else feel bad. Weighed down in societal rules, it's easy to look for someone to tell you how to behave, how to live, how to think.

And then, of course, it's easier to accept a government controlling your life - at least you don't have to track all of those behavioral rules anymore, because someone will do it for you. Make no mistake about it - once you start instituting rules like this, it's easier to institute the next one. And the next. And the next. Until finally, individuality is bad, and personal rights are nonexistent. People live in fear of criticism, fear of being different, fear of standing out.

Start socializing an entire society this way, and you really have problems. Start indoctrinating group thinking, and you can really get things moving.

What happens when socialism, communism, and altruism are the reigning philosophies? Well, then liberty dies, and the great American Experiment is no more.

Enforcing group "niceness" seems benign if you only look at the surface. Look beneath the surface, and you see the inherent, glaring danger.

After all, this country wouldn't exist if a group of colonists had feared offending.

Your Tax Dollars At Work...

They're not terrorists; they're just non-terror-challenged...

Senate Bill calls for "consulting with experts to ensure that the lexicon used within public statements...does not aid extremists by offending the American Muslim community"

S. 4, a bill to implement provisions of the 9/11 Commission, is currently on the Senate floor. It includes under "Miscellaneous Provisions" Section 1302, a "Sense of the Senate Regarding Combating Domestic Radicalization." Predictably, it is based on the usual premise (Subsection (a)(1)) that extremists are "exploiting" Islam to achieve "ideological ends" -- but what those ideological ends might be, and how exactly Islam is being exploited, is not explained.

Also predictable are the dhimmi measures suggested to take care of the problem, including:

"Consulting with experts to ensure that the lexicon used within public statements is precise and appropriate and does not aid extremists by offending the American Muslim community"
This is D'Souzaite thinking: if we speak honestly about the Islamic jihad being waged against us, it will drive Muslims who abhor the jihad to join it. That's like saying that a Christian who despises Fred Phelps (the "God hates fags" guy) will join his group if he or Christianity is criticized...

Read the Rest at Jihad Watch

Ban certain words, and it becomes easier to ban others. If I can't call terrorists base, murdering, cowardly wastes of perfectly good breathing air today, it becomes easier and easier to eventually ensure that the word "terrorist" disappears altogether.

Personally, I despise certain words - certain derrogatory racial terminology drives me up a tree. But there's a difference between social mores dictating what is and is not acceptable, and your GOVERNMENT deciding what you can and cannot say. When we start deciding that something can't be said because it might offend someone, the right to free speech itself is threatened.

Your Constitution never intended to guarantee that you would be free from ever being offended. It did, however, intend to guarantee that your government would not be able to dictate what you were or were not allowed to say. I understand reasonable restrictions (the whole "fire in a crowded theater" thing, but it's important to note that a rule like that does not ban the CONTENT of your speech. It simply clarifies that you do not have a right to risk others' lives.

To ensure that speech about jihadists is sanitized so as to not offend Muslims completely ignores the fact peaceful Muslims should be offended by Muslim terrorists, not critics of Muslim terrorists!!!

I talked about the dangers of banning words a little while ago here. And now we have another incident. Public outcry to chastize someone who says something people don't like is one thing. That is freedom. Don't like what a politician says - don't contribute to their campaign, and don't vote for them. Don't like what an actor says - don't pay to see their movies, and don't have them speak at your event.

But when the government starts engineering our speech, we are at grave risk. Political correctness is going to kill this country.

It's doubleplusbad.
