Blogwatch

A few posts of note in the wake of the disgusting, but predictable, House vote to withdraw troops (spineless traitors):

The Thunder Run:
Democrats Vote to Surrender
...Compare their doom and gloom assessment with the assessment being given by men on the ground and you'll see who is living in an alternate reality. We can only hope that the deadline date of April 1, 2008 some kind of sick joke on the aprt of the Democrats, who will at that time, simply jump up and scream, "Got Ya, April Fools!"

I guess America's cowards can't handle the thought of actually winning...

Michael Yon:
Al-Qaeda on the Run: Feasting on the Moveable Beast
...Al Qaeda’s ultimate failure in much of Anbar and now in parts of Diyala relates back to one of the pillars of success—or failure—in this war: Values. People who understand how to tamp down this war realize the critical pillar that values can play into success or failure in counterinsurgency, or COIN...

Nor can they work up the spine to stop horrors like this:

Michael Yon:
Bless the Beasts and Children
...I told the Iraqi commander, Captain Baker, that it was important that Americans see this; he took me around the graves and showed more than I wanted to see. He said the people had been murdered by al Qaeda. I made video of him speaking, and of the horrible scene. The heat and stench were crushingly oppressive and broken only by the sounds of shovels as Iraqi soldiers kept digging...

A Gold Star Father's Thoughts on Memorial Day

Mr. Stokely sends us his Memorial Day thoughts. he
writes:

No doubt, as
David recounted the other day,
Memorial Day has become anything but in the eyes of most. Plain and simple,
Memorial Day is about one group of people who share one common distinguishing
denominator - they are U.S. military peronnel who died in the line of duty,
serving with honor the country the America they loved. DUTY HONOR
COUNTRY.

This past week I have tried to think what is the proper approach to
Memorial Day. Obviously the word celebrate, at first glance seems to have the
wrong "theme", for how do you celebrate the death of a soldier, sailor or airman
in the line of duty? It should not be called a holiday for can it be proper to
have fun and leisure on a day when we are supposed to be remembering those who died in the line of duty so we can remain free and prosperous?

So, what should we do? Simple to me, REMEMBER, for when we remember, we
show respect for the sacrifice made on our behalf. For me, I will remember these
things about my son and how we came to be a family whose Memorial Day was
forever changed in an instant:

Blogwatch

The Thunder Run has a new feature - and a new contributor. TRCNAK - or Thunder Run Correspondent for Naval Affairs (Kuwait) - has already proven to be a fantastic addition to what's already a great blog.

Here are highlights from his first few posts:

The Thunder Run Enters Kuwait:
This place is covered with highly motivated Americans (military, civilian, and contractor). These people have this place running as smooth as glass. They support what is going on up north, and I have never seen more talented and "switched on" people. ... There is no playing games here. I saw no Mickey Mouse crap.American flags are proudly displayed in the patient treatment areas. There were paintings of angels enveloping soldiers and motivational stuff...

Working with Professionals:
...I'm scheduled to do inventory, and I find what I am looking for. I finish ahead of schedule and duck into the ISO shelter for a break. I can hear the Sea Bees outside in the harsh wind cutting with the circular saw. God bless the Sea Bees. They are from a Reserve Unit in the midwest, and they are motivated. They never stop moving....

Our Support is Working:
We need what you provide. On a larger scale, your readers need to do what they do best. Whether it is to support the troops with mail or donating computers, or whatever it is - IT IS WORKING!! That's right, regardless of what the television is saying, it is working! So don't stop!

Many years ago, an old gray sergeant once told me, "Damn it soldier, don't fix it if it ain't broken." Truer words were never spoken...

"Da Hug":
I think we’ve all had that sixth sense that something is missing. You may be walking in the woods and realize that there is something different. The birds have stopped chirping, or there is a lack of background noise. Well, I just realized that I’ve been here for several days now, and I have heard very few complaints...

Make sure to check all of them out, and while you're there, don't miss this one:

Defeatists Let Down Our Guardsmen
Our newest expert on all thing Military in the state of Maryland, Elizabeth Marsh Cupino: give me a break! Let me get this straight a “journalist” who has never once written about our National Guard or military is now an expert on national defense because she read a single little snippet of news...

The world is short one Hero today:

Today, an old man was found dead in his favorite chair, having passed peacefully in his sleep. He was my father-in-law. His name was Gene Easley.

Grim at BlackFive tells you why his father-in-law is Someone You should Know...

Stomach-turner of the Week

I don't think I can quite get myself to be civil enough to comment on the House vote this week...not yet. Fortunately, David can. Over at the Thunder Run, he's posted an article, and his response to a surprise pair that jumped on the "how to lose a war" bandwagon...

218-212 House OKs Surrender
And 2 Republican's crossed the aisle to join with them: Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD) and Walter Jones (R-NC).

WASHINGTON - A sharply divided House voted Friday to order President Bush to bring combat troops home from Iraq next year, a victory for Democrats in an epic war-powers struggle and Congress' boldest challenge yet to the administration's policy.

Ignoring a White House veto threat, lawmakers voted 218-212, mostly along party lines, for a binding war spending bill requiring that combat operations cease before September 2008, or earlier if the Iraqi government does not meet certain requirements. Democrats said it was time to heed the mandate of their election sweep last November, which gave them control of Congress.

"The American people have lost faith in the president's conduct of this war," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi D-Calif. "The American people see the reality of the war, the president does not."

The vote, echoing clashes between lawmakers and the White House over the Vietnam War four decades ago, pushed the Democratic-led Congress a step closer to a constitutional collision with the wartime commander in chief. Bush has insisted that lawmakers allow more time for his strategy of sending nearly 30,000 additional troops to Iraq to work....

Make sure to check out the post.
