1871 - Boss Tweed (William Macy Tweed), the Democratic leader of Tammany Hall, is arrested after the NY Times exposes his corruption.
1893 - A hurricane hits the coast between Savannah, GA, and Charleston, SC.
1896 - The first Pali Road is completed in Hawaii (winds are so strong there that streams flow UP!)
