'No tell' policy sought for illegals

NEW HAVEN - After some confusion among police about the city's long-standing practice of not reporting illegal immigrants to federal authorities, Mayor John DeStefano Jr. is having legal counsel look to put such a policy in writing.
DeStefano and Police Chief Francisco Ortiz have long encouraged immigrants to not be afraid to report incidents of crime because the city did not intend to report their status.
Lovely. Because that's the only thing stopping them from reporting a crime, right?
Oh, and catch this gem:
"Being an illegal immigrant is a civil violation, but not a crime. As I understand the law, in the case of a civil violation, we do not have an obligation to go any further with it," DeStefano said.
Think the crime-ridden home of Yale is unique? Think again:
A total of 68 cities and state governments have declined to enforce federal civil immigration violations as counterproductive to community policing, where the safety of residents and a good working relationship is of paramount importance.
I swear, one of these days my head is just going to explode.
