This Day in American History - The USS Forrestal

The USS Forrestal awaits her turn to refuel
Mediterranean Sea, April, 1957

Shortly before 1100 hours on July 29, 1967, as the USS Forrestal prepared for the second launch of the day, a Zuni rocket accidentally fired from an F-4 Phantom parked on the deck's starboard side. It slammed into the 400-gallon fuel tank of an A-4D Skyhawk. Fuel spewed out and caught fire under other aircraft, igniting rockets and exploding ordinance. Within minutes, the aft end of the flight deck was engulfed.

The USS Oriskany, herself the victim of a fire nine months earlier, was one of those who raced to provide aid. While the fire on the deck was contained in about an hour, the fires below continued for another twelve. The ship was saved, but had to return to Norfolk for major repairs.

All told, the fire killed 132, wounded 62, and resulted in over $100 million worth of damage. Two missing servicemen were presumed dead.

The incident is still used to teach lessons in Ammunition safety and damage control today.

Check out the USS Forrestal Association for info on today's ceremonies to honor those lost.
