A Hero Heals - Joey's Update, from 3/29/05

Hi,
I have been to DC over the Easter holidays to visit Joey and to see him walk on both prosthetics for the first time. The therapist straps a tall walker to both arms and Joey glides it forward; then he moves his right leg first and the left leg second. The left knee doesn't bend so his step is stiff on the left leg. He walked down the hall and back... His left hand surgery is over and the stitches were removed last Friday, 25th. The surgeon cut top and bottom of little finger and into the palm to loosen tendons. The top was cut to remove the plate and also a 3 inch cut in the wrist to correct never damage from the aneurysm surgery. Joey is in therapy every week day so pray God will give him the strength and endurance to stand the pain and continue to improve. I hope all of you saw the TIME article which hit the stands on the 21st. It had HAIL MARY on the cover. If not, maybe you can find it on the web or go to a local library. Joey and Jayme will be traveling to Colorado on April 3 through 9th with Walter Reed Handicap to snow ski. Of course, Joey will be seated and strapped on a snow board but he will have fun, knowing my Joey. Jayme will finish her last day at Bethesda on April 15th and on May 14th she will graduate at Texas A & M. Joey and I are flying down for the occasion. I am so proud of her; she has been remarkable these past few months juggling her time and taking care of Joey. I am home taking care of my mom and also dealing with tax time, April 15th. I do miss being at Walter Reed; I did get to hug a lot necks last week. I saw new soldiers and I also saw the old soldiers. Pray for them all that God will implant positive attitudes and physical strength to deal with their lives now. God Bless you and keep praying for Joey's ability to walk again.
Love,
Gail, Joey and Jayme
