1291 - The Jewish grand vizier of Persia, Sa'ad al'Da'ulah, is assassinated.

1461 - Henry VI is deposed in the "War of the Roses."

1625 - King James I (VI) of England, dies at age 53

1770 - In Boston, British troops fire on a rioting crowd, killing three instantly. Two later die of
their wounds. The incident would be known as "The Boston Massacre."

1793 - Austrian recapture Liege, a crushing defeat for the French.

1821 - James Monroe is inaugurated on March 5th; the first president to do so. The 4th was a Sunday.

1836 - Samuel Colt manufactures his first pistol - the 34-caliber "Texas".
Mexico attacks the Alamo

1864 - General John C. Breckinridge assumes control of the Confederate forces.

1903 - a treaty for the construction of the Baghdad Railway is drawn.

1905 - Russian forces begin to retreat from Mukden, in Manchuria.

1912 - Italy becomes the first to use military dirigibles, conducting reconnaissance flights near Tripoli.

1918 - The Soviet capital is moved from Petrograd to Moscow.

1928 - Hitler's National Socialists win the vote in Bavaria.

1933 - Hitler and Nationalist allies win the Reichstag vote. This will be Germany's last free election until after World War II.

1942 - The Japanese march into Batavia.

1943 - Germany, reeling from war losses, begins calling up fifteen and sixteen-year-olds for military service.
The RAF bombs Essen.

1945 - Allies bomb The Hague, in the Netherlands.
U.S. Generals Eisenhower, Patton, and Patch meet in Luneville
The U.S. 7th Army Corps captures Cologne

1946 - Winston Churchill, during remarks in Fulton, Missouri, states that "an iron curtain has descended on the Continent [of Europe]."

1953 - Josef Stalin, Soviet leader responsible for the murder of at least 11 million people, dies at age 73.

1959 - Iran and the United States sign a military / economic treaty.

1960 - Elvis Presley is discharged from the U.S. Army.

1970 - The Nuclear nonproliferation treaty goes into effect.

1971 - The "Blackhorse Regiment," the U.S. 11th Armored Cavalry, withdraws from Vietnam, save for its 2nd Squadron. The 2nd Squadron remains there until March of 1972, when it too left for Germany.

1976 - Britain decides to continue rule in Northern Ireland indefinitely, abandoning talks in Ulster.

1984 - The United States accuses Iraq of using chemical weapons, specifically, poison gas.

1991 - Iraq repeals its annexation of Kuwait.
