1649 - The French Government and the Frondeurs (rebels) sign the peace of Rueil.
1816 - British warships attack Algiers, attempting to abolish slavery.
1824 - The U.S. War Department creates the Bureau of Indian affairs, naming Ely Parker (a Seneca) to lead it.
1845 - In violation of the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, Chief Hone-Heke and 700 Maoris burn the 1861 - The Confederate Convention adopts the new constitution.
1863 -Ulysses S. Grant and Union forces abandon preparations to seize Vicksburg after they failed to pass Fort Pemberton, to the north.
1865 -General William Sherman and his forces occupy Fayetteville, N.C.
1900 - British Prime Minister Lord Salisbury rejects Boer leader Paul Kruger's peace overtures.
